There is a saying, “It’s not so much what you say, it’s the way that you say it!” Nothing could be closer to the truth. An individual’s delivery style and ability to be an effective listener are key to professional success.
According to an article in Fortune magazine, “Why Women Still Don’t Hit the Top”, much of the blame seems to be placed upon communication skills which sabotage a woman’s message and her ability to succeed. Weak language undermines the strongest of messages.
To communicate well, women should remember the following:
· Your appearance is critical to communication credibility
· Your voice will be judged by its volume, clarity and pitch
· Your choice of words are important for impact of message
· Effective listening is as important as speaking skills
· It is important to sell your ideas; you should never hesitate
We can all improve our communication skills to become more professional. In the business and professional world, males are still more prevalent in positions of prestige and power and are the major decision makers. Much of their communication style, both verbal and non-verbal is geared towards establishing and maintaining their positions. They tend to take control, to compete and be more independent. Women on the other hand, communication style tend to be less aggressive, and more passive and submissive.
The more self-confident women are the more assertively they communicate, and some males may feel intimidated by their strength of character.
The bottom line….awareness is key. Be aware of, and adaptable to, the different communication styles that bring respect and remove obstacles to your success in the business and professional world.
