A 24-year old man charged in the death of a 4-year-old girl has now reached new levels of low after stealing a cross from her memorial site. Cordelia Kuether of Sheboygan, Wis. was killed after two cars collided on the road. Kuether had stopped to pet a dog before the accident, another two-year-old was hurt and their mother witnessed the accident.
According to Sheboygan authorities, 24-year-old Nathan Heitzmann has been charged with knowingly operating while suspended and homicide by veh. use-control. substance. According to a criminal complaint the cross was purchased by Cordelia’s family and placed at the site of her memorial which was in a private yard.
Officers received reports on August 17th that a theft had occurred with the main suspect being Heitzmann. A witness told authorities that Heitzmann showed him the white cross and allegedly said “[Heitzmann] needed it for himself.” When an officer interviewed Heitzmann, he allegedly said, “Are you sure my little brother didn’t take the sign officer, the other day he told me he was really sick of looking at it.”
Heitzmann faces one misdemeanor count of theft. If convicted, he faces a maximum fine of $10,000 and/or 9 months in prison.
