Not spank or not to spank? That is the question.
It’s one of the most controversial aspects of parenting, is physical force acceptable in disciplining your children? Here is what some notable figures in the spotlight have to say about using corporal punishment.
Former first lady Michelle Obama spoke about the practice where she expressed her frustration with it. “I did it one or two times and just found it to be completely ineffective because it was less about teaching a lesson and more about my own [feelings].”
The original American Idol told a radio station that her strategy with the punishment is a last ditch effort. “I find nothing wrong with a spanking,” adding, “I warn her. I’m like, ‘Hi, I’m gonna spank you on your bottom if you don’t stop right now. Like, this is ridiculous.'”
“So that’s a tricky thing when you’re out in public, ’cause then people are like, you know, they think that’s wrong or something, but I find nothing wrong with a spanking.
“My parents spanked me, I did fine in life and I feel fine about it.
“I’m from the South, y’all, so we get spankings. My mom would call the principal if I ever ended up in the principal’s office and give permission for her to spank me… I’m a well-rounded individual with a lot of character, so I think it’s fine.”
Billy Ray Cyrus had his own unique spin, revealing to the View that while he never hit any of his children–sometimes he thought on it. “I could never spank my kids, I couldn’t hit my kids. I look back at it and think, maybe I should … I don’t know.”
