Whitening teeth doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. Here are five remedies, using products you probably already have in your house, to whiten teeth naturally.
Oil pulling
Studies have shown that oil pulling reduces bacteria in the mouth. All you have to do is swish around one tablespoon of oil in your mouth (not super pleasant, I know) for 20 minutes – or as long as you can bear. You can use many different oils, but coconut oil is recommended for its milder taste.
Apple cider vinegar
Dilute it with water and swish it around your mouth. Apple cider vinegar’s main active ingredient is the acetic acid which kills bacteria. The water/vinegar mixture will act as a mouthwash to clean your mouth and also whiten your teeth. Be warned, however, this is not something to do every day; too much exposure to vinegar softens the enamel.
Baking soda
Baking soda has natural whitening properties and is often an ingredient in toothpaste. It prevents bacteria from growing and can remove surface stains over time with continued use. To do this, mix baking soda with a bit of water and brush your teeth as you normally would.
Eat fruits and vegetables
The crunching involved when eating fresh fruits and vegetables can naturally remove plaque buildup on your teeth.
Limit sugar
Diets high in sugar promote the growth of the bacteria that cause plaque and gingivitis (Streptococcus mutans if you’re curious). Reducing your sugar intake will help your teeth stay whiter and healthier longer.
