Depression might be a silent killer but it doesn’t have to be that way if those who suffer from it have a great support system. Here are a few ways to let you know if a loved one may be depressed, and how you can help them. Just remember, there are so many things you can do to help, but the desire to change has to come from within that person.
Their sleeping habits have changed
One sign of depression involves having difficulties sleeping. They either have trouble falling asleep or sleep for short, unfulfilling periods of time and wake up with negative thoughts. You can help this person by getting them to spend time outside during daylight, as sunlight will help their bodies stabilize sleep and wake cycles.
They think negatively
Another symptom of depression is expressing negative thoughts. They dampen the mood with their pessimism. Once you hear them uttering something negative, interrupt their thoughts. Help them come up with a symbol that will make them aware of these types of thoughts so that they have an option to adjust them as soon as they emerge.
Their eating habits change
You notice a change in how much they’ve been eating – some people start to eat more and some start to eat less. Rather than letting them eat their feelings, help them follow good eating guidelines so that their bodies receive the right nutrition.
They’re angry
Those who are depressed are more stressed than usual because it’s difficult for them to get through everyday difficulties, making them frustrated. You might want to start attending a gym or going for a run together, because regular exercise helps to burn off that bad energy caused by stress.
They have suicidal thoughts
When depression hits some people, unfortunately, they may take it to the extreme and want to end their lives. Take this very seriously and suggest that they see a doctor or call a crisis hotline.
