Are you in a new relationship and wonder where it’s headed? Here are five ways to know if your relationship is one for the long haul.
You trust each other. Trust is the backbone for all healthy partnerships, and with it you and your partner can withstand tough issues that may threaten your relationship. “It is difficult to be vulnerable and share problems with others,” therapist Kimberly Hershenson told INSIDER. “When a partner is able to open up to you, it is important to not break their trust.”
You share similar goals. Personality and patience is crucial to every relationship but sharing long term goals and plans is also crucial to ensuring a healthy future together. Therapist Jim Seibold highlighted the importance in having sometimes difficult conversations about where a relationship is headed in terms of kids, marriage, jobs, and location.
Physical intimacy is another key part of a long lasting relationship. This doesn’t mean you and your partner have to have sex every night; rather, little acts of physical intimacy can go a long way. “You physically touch each other,” Hershenson said. “Whether it’s a kiss hello or goodbye, snuggling on the couch, or holding hands. Even non-sexual touching builds connection between partners.”
Healthy communication is something that cannot be overstated when it comes to supporting a healthy relationship. When it comes to expressing your needs you should act with care while making sure your voice is heard, you should listen to your partner with open ears and make sure that they feel seen and heard as well.
Last, being able to let go of your pride will make sure your relationship is for the long run. Don’t get this mistaken for letting go of personal boundaries. In healthy partnerships, sometimes a blow to your pride in order to end an argument or show your partner you are sorry is necessary.
