According to Elaine Aron, PhD, a psychologist at Stony Brook University in New York, 20% of the population are genetically predisposed to be more aware and empathic. This group of highly sensitive people, or “empaths,” sometimes gets a bad rap. They are more vulnerable to criticism, and are often underestimated. But what the 80% of the population fails to recognize about our extra-sensitive counterparts are the amazing qualities come with being more empathetic.
They are good at managing their environment
While it might seem counterintuitive to place a highly sensitive person in a position where they can be criticized, they actually make very good managers. Empaths are not only tapped into their own feelings, but are also attuned to the feelings of those around them. This makes them especially good at nurturing peaceful environments (whether in the workplace or at home) that are beneficial for all parties involved.
They are incredibly creative and artistic
Highly sensitive people may seem meek on the outside, but they have a vibrant inner life. They have an emotional connection to the arts, which they may keep to themselves at first. But their ability to draw connections between creative expression and practical issues gives them a unique perspective when it comes to both professional and personal projects.
They are keen observers
There is no better person to talk to about a problem you are facing than an empath. Not only are they great listeners, they actively notice the discomfort of other’s—so they might come ask you about your problem before you even get the chance to bring it up to them! But you can’t lie to them. They are excellent lie detectors and will not let you get away with anything less than 100% honesty.
They recognize and block out narcissists
There is nothing worse for an empath than a person who never considers the thoughts and feelings of others. Narcissists can be charismatic, so less sensitive people don’t immediately jump to cutting their toxicity out of our lives. But highly sensitive people don’t waste their time on those who only care about themselves. It might not be a bad idea to have an empath around the next time you encounter a narcissist.
They can easily detect the energy of a room
Highly sensitive people listen to their intuition. They know right away when they enter a space that has negative energy. It takes time, but eventually empaths are able to take this understanding and use it to their benefit. They learn how to protect themselves in situations of stress or upheaval, and how to cherish and foster positive atmospheres.
