There are so many changes going on today that it’s hard to keep track of what’s happening. People are angry. Violence is all around us. This country is split. Who knows how this split will be reconciled? Most of us are incredibly stressed, but there are things that can help. Here are some ways to keep your sanity when everything else seems to be out of control.
You are more than your fearful thoughts
In times of major change, our minds are over-active and we are probably thinking too much. Negative thoughts have a hay day. Becoming aware of what you’re thinking is the first step to taking control.
Don’t let negativity sap your energy
You can sit and worry—and worry, and worry— but nothing is going to come of it. Instead, you can use your energy more productively. If you’re against certain things, know that there are ways of taking action.
Focus on the things around you that are right
Don’t have tunnel vision. Just because a few setbacks have occurred doesn’t mean your life is totally void of promise. Focus on projects that you enjoy working on. Hang around those you care about—the ones who will help keep you sane.
You’re not alone
Unite with like-minded people. Being around people who share your views will help make your situation feel less terrible and more approachable. Engage with those who will help you learn and build from your situation.
Keep an open mind
Even people who are diametrically opposed to where you are, they believe as strongly for something else, like you do. Show compassion. Put yourself in the others person’s shoes. Although it can be difficult, try to be objective. Understanding each other’s differences can help bring about more change and understanding.
