Memorial Day probably won’t look like what you’re used to. But this gives you the opportunity to make it especially memorable! Here are some tips to fill your day off with positive memories:
Get crafty!
You’ve been looking at the same decor for a while now, so spruce it up with a little red, white, and blue! There are tons of quick, easy crafts you can do with materials lying around your house. You can also get creative with sidewalk art (because what’s more summer than chalk?). To keep the real holiday spirit, you could make a cute thank you card to send to a vet.
Get virtual!
Just because you’re at home doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate vets or learn about American history! PBS will stream the National Memorial Day Concert on Sunday, May 24. On May 25, the Military Women’s Memorial will have a virtual ceremony you can attend. There will even be a parade! “The National Memorial Day Parade: America Stands Tall” will be aired on ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX stations for free on Memorial Day. You can also check out Arlington’s National Cemetery’s online exhibit.
Get outside!
The start of summer means warmer weather! Enjoy it with some outside time by just taking a walk or playing yard games. Break out cornhole, horseshoes, or some bocce balls, and just have fun! If you’re feeling adventurous, try backyard camping! Pitch your tent, roast some smores, or at least go stargazing!
Get cooking!
If you’re a grill master, Memorial Day is your day to show off your skills! But even if you’re not, you can try out some new recipes for the holiday. It doesn’t have to be anything crazy – you can throw some blueberries and strawberries in whipped cream or vanilla ice cream and feel that much more patriotic during dinner. You could even treat yourself to a refreshing cocktail to celebrate the start of summer.
Watch a patriotic movie!
Rewatch your favorite American movie, or search this list to find something new! You can go old school with a classic like Forrest Gump or go more modern with Captain America. There’s enough out there that everyone should be able to find something they like. Due to graphic content, this might be a better activity once the kids have gone to bed, but that’s a perfect opportunity for some cuddle time with your special someone!
Especially now, we need to take advantage of every opportunity to celebrate the good things in our lives. Don’t let this holiday pass you by without a little well-deserved festivity! You’re going to remember these times, so make sure you throw in as many positive memories as you can!
