An article on People.com reported that the Lincoln Police Department was alerted of the crash by one of the victim’s iPhones. The crash happened in a residential area on Sunday.
Five men were pronounced dead at the scene and a 24-year-old woman later died at the hospital, according to a feature on WOWT.com.
The driver was a 26-year-old man, and the other victims were a 21-year-old, two 22-year-olds, and a 23-year-old.
“This is the worst crash in Lincoln in recent memory,” Assistant Police Chief Michon Morrow said. “We’ve been trying to think of another accident this bad, and we haven’t come up with anything.”
It was reported on the New York Post website that the crash awoke Brad Bartak, who lives on the street where the crash occurred. He tried using a rock to break the car window, but the car engine caught fire. Bartak and other neighbors tried putting out the flames with a hose until responders arrived.
Police haven’t revealed the cause of the crash.
“The cause of this accident is going to take us some time to pin down,” Morrow said. “We are looking at all possibilities, including alcohol, speed, or distracted driving.”
