Relationships are hard work; and that’s an understatement. But make sure to take the following things to heart before you get involved. And if you’re already coupled up, don’t take your partner for granted–remember these tips.
Respect your partner
Even if their point of view is different from yours (which might be most of the time). You won’t find another being who thinks about love, or even life, the same exact way that you do, and that’s OK. Respect that. You would want the same courtesy in return.
Make trust and loyalty top priorities
Loyalty isn’t just about being faithful to each other (although that’s important). Believe them when they tell you they care about you and show it. It’s about being there for each other, even when you may not feel like it.
Plan weekly getaways
It’s good to step out of your regular routines every so often for some uninterrupted quality time. Venture out to new cities, if not countries. Share your most and least favorite experiences with each other.
Don’t expect him to react like your girlfriends would (he’s a guy)
Some days, you’ll want him to be more communicative about his feelings (like your girlfriends are) or more excited about date ideas than you. Embrace his different qualities, interests and strengths. They’re what attracted you to him in the first place.
Keep it special even when the stress is on
It can get tough balancing a relationship alongside work, family, school or other obligations. When life becomes overwhelming, don’t push each other away. Remember why you are together – for love and support. Never take that for granted.
Don’t listen to “well-meaning” others
Tune out gossipers who have nothing positive to say and are highly critical of your relationship. What you share with your partner is really between the two of you (unless you need to seek out the help of a trusted advisor).
Don’t be shy about getting intimate
Let each other know you dig them. Just because you’re past the honeymoon stage doesn’t mean you can’t show you’re still crazy about each other. Keep the flame burning for as long as you can.
