A young girl is a pillar of strength and bravery in a Nashville community after she saved herself and her three-year old sister from a carjacking. The Metro Nashville Police Department revealed that felon Elijah Malik McDowell previously carjacked another vehicle before searching for another victim.
Luis Mena had just picked his two granddaughters up from preschool and was preparing to go home. McDowell attempted to carjack Mena and began a physical fight with the grandfather which resulted in Mena being knocked unconscious after being pulled from his car.
However he came back to his senses when he heard the crying of his grandchild. “What made me conscious again was when one of my little kids cried,” Mena said, per WSMV. “That was my biggest worry — not only my truck getting stolen, but with my girls in it.”
His oldest grandchild, Amy, 7, came to her and her younger sister’s rescue. Mena recounted how he realized the crying was coming from outside the car. Amy and her younger sister Stephanie, 3, had been able to escape the car before McDowell took off.
“She jumped from the truck, and she pulled her sister out of the truck so they could escape and be safe,” Mena said. “The materialistic things come and go. But my girls don’t,” Mena added.
McDowell was apprehended by a canine unit and his bail has been posted at $211,000.
