A 74-year-old woman has become the oldest woman to give birth to a set of twin daughters after undergoing IVF treatments. The woman, Erramatti Mangayamma, and her husband, 80-year-old Rajarao, welcomed their daughters after sixty years of trying to become parents. The couple’s daughters were conceived after one round of IVF treatments. The daughters were born with no complications according to doctors.
The doctors, including Dr. Umasankar, of the Ahalya Hospital, said that Mangayamma was not at risk for any health complications following the delivery.
A 61-year-old Nebraska woman, Cecile Eledge, recently made headlines this past spring after she gave birth to her own granddaughter via IVF for her son, Matthew Eledge, and his husband, Elliot Dougherty. Using an egg from Dougherty’s sister and Eledge’s sperm, Cecile was able to give birth to a healthy baby girl named Uma Louise Dougherty-Eledge in March.
Dr. Carolyn Maud Doherty, Cecile’s doctor, reported on the woman’s health saying that while the woman is in her early sixties she was ‘in better health than most twenty-year-olds’ with a ‘40-year-old’s body.’
Cecilie’s son explained how he would address the somewhat unconventional nature of his daughter’s pregnancy to her. According to NBC News, Matthew Eledge said, “I’ll tell her Aunt Lea gave a piece of her,” Matthew Eledge said. “She gave a seed to start the gift of life, and her grandmother provided the loving garden for her to bloom, and I think that’s gorgeous.”
