Based on the Hindu chakra system, each energy center in the body is a catalyst of consciousness and human function. There exist a total of seven energy sources within the body, referred to as chakras. They guide our survival instincts, self-esteem, communication, and ability to encounter love. Chakras are located along the spine, where the last energy source pinpoints to the brain.
Each chakra rotates at a differing speed and has its own color. According to Kellie Jo Conn, GG, the size and brightness of the chakra is dependent on an individual’s development, health, and stress levels. If chakras are unbalanced, an individual may experience fatigue or depression. Constant balance between chakras develops a sense of well-being. Reshma Patel, Doctor of Physical Therapy, identifies the seven chakras that can be the origins of our discomfort.
First chakra- root
Located at the tailbone of the spine, this chakra is the source of desire for survival, safety, and security. It is what allows us to feel grounded in our daily lives. If the energy to this chakra is blocked, an individual may become anxious, insecure, and frustrated. Physical ailments include obesity, knee problems, and anorexia nervosa.
Second chakra-belly
It is located two inches below the navel, holding the needs for creativity, self-worth, sexuality, and intuition. Proper balance in this chakra means you allow yourself to freely express your emotions. It guides individuals on how to relate to others in a friendly manner.
Third chakra- solar plexus
Two inches below the breastbone, this is the center of passion, impulse, strength, and ego. It also houses the energy for psychic development. When lacking balance, you may feel self-conscious, confused, uncontrollable, and depressed. Physical problems include digestive issues, diabetes, nervous energy, and food allergies.
Fourth chakra-heart
Resting in between the shoulder blades, this is the center for love, compassion and spirituality. It allows a person to give, receive, and understand love. This chakra connects the mind, body, and spirit. When unbalanced, you may experience paranoia, indecisiveness, hesitance to let go, and unworthiness. Physical symptoms include heart attack, high blood pressure, insomnia, and difficulty breathing. When balanced, you will feel compassionate and empathetic.
Fifth chakra-throat
This chakra lies in the “V” of the collarbone, at the lower neck. It is the energy source for communication, speech, and writing. When unbalanced, you may feel timid, quiet, fragile, and inexpressive. Physical signs include skin irritations, ear infections, sore throats, back pain, and inflammation. When balanced, you may feel musically and artistically inspired.
Sixth chakra- third eye
This “third eye” is located above the physical eyes, on the center of the forehead. It is the energy center for high intuition, psychic ability, and energy of light. It aids in the elimination of selfish attitudes. Afraid of success and being non-assertive are signs that your sixth chakra may be unbalanced.
Seventh chakra- crown
Behind the top of the skull, this is the source of enlightenment, dynamic thought, and spirituality. It allows the individual to receive wisdom easily. Destructive feelings linger when this chakra becomes unbalanced. Physical ailments include migraines and depression.
Is there more to the human body than what can be seen and researched? Ancient human energy novels have recycled the chakra system, revealing the possible alternatives to common discomfort. It is up to you to believe and decide.
