Sometimes we are lucky enough to connect with someone and fall in “love” fast. But is it love? There are many reasons we are drawn to someone—attraction to their personality, appearance, and just basic compatibility. During the beginning stages of dating, it can be difficult to tell if you are truly in love or if it is just an infatuation. Here are some key differences to keep in mind:
Infatuation happens quicker than falling in love.
People tend to become infatuation with an illusion in the beginning of a relationship. Love comes from building a strong foundation—learning about one another. Infatuation tends to be an obsession with what you see (or think you see) in the beginning.
Infatuation doesn’t last long, while love is enduring.
When someone is infatuated it can end at any time. Love endures and is accommodating to different phases we go through in life. An infatuation can feel like you are walking on shaky ground and things might end at any minute. Love is solid, strong, and timeless.
If there is a commitment, it is most likely love.
Love comes with a commitment to one another. Infatuation or an obsession does not want or desire a commitment. Real love is monogamous.
Infatuation is all about the physical part of the relationship.
If your relationship is all about being with each other physically, it is most likely infatuation. If you feel that you and our partner are invested in exploring each other not only physically, but mentally and emotionally too, then it is love.
Love consists of good communication, understanding, and trust.
Infatuation consists of drama, jealousy, and a desire to control. Infatuation usually comes with the qualities of being possessive and distrustful.
Infatuation stems from the exterior.
Being obsessed with someone’s appearance, how you look when you are in public together, and how they “make” you feel wanted is infatuation. Love is deeper and focuses more on what is on the inside of them matching what is on the inside of you. Love grows through friendship and infatuation grows through desire.
Infatuation is striving for perfection, while love is accepting flaws.
Infatuation doesn’t have room for mistakes. Loving someone involves the knowledge that no one is perfect and people grow.
