Jessica Chastain has been married to her Italian husband, Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo, for just over five years now and the couple couldn’t be happier being together. Their love story is one anyone only dreams about, from meeting in Paris to honeymooning in Zimbabwe, it’s fair to say the two have met their soulmates.
The couple first met in 2012 in Paris at the Giorgio Armani fashion show. Gian Luca was formerly a director of public relations for the company. Chastain attended the show the same day she was nominated for her first Oscar for her role in The Help.
“The day that Gian Luca and I met was the day I got nominated for an Oscar for [The Help],” she told Kelly Ripa and Anderson Cooper on Live with Kelly and Ryan in 2017. “It’s, like, probably the best day I ever had.”
“Who can’t relate to this story?” Kelly jokingly responded, regarding how perfect their real life meet-cute was.
“It was like the beginning of my career,” Chastain added, “and then I met my future husband. Who knew?”
Jessica and Gian Luca eventually married in 2017 (prior to her appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan). However, she had always been apprehensive about marriage, especially being a celebrity and actress. In 2021, Jessica talked with Vanity Fair about her views on marriage, citing her feelings all the way back in college.
“In college, you’re trying to figure out, ‘Okay — I have very strong opinions and I’m passionate about my work. Is this going to make my partner feel less adequate or less successful?’ I mean, there was a reason why I decided [not to date] actors pretty early on, because I didn’t want to navigate that. And there was a reason why I decided that I wanted a partner who is super confident.
“I feel the more success that I have,” she added, “the more [Gian Luca] feels like he’s a part of it and he’s successful in his own right.”
Even while they were dating, Chastain discussed her questionable outlooks on marriage.
“Sometimes when someone [in the press] asks me about my dating status, I get really quiet about that because I want to protect it,” she told E! Online in 2013. “When I’m engaged someday—who knows to who—I’ll probably be more open about it.”
Fast forward five years – nearly six months into their marriage – and Jessica had talked with WSJ Magazine about how she opened up more to the idea of marriage while dating Gian Luca.
“I never wanted to get married,” she started. “When I first met my husband, he knew that marriage wasn’t something I was interested in. And then as we got to know each other, the idea of marriage shifted for me.
“There are some things worth celebrating,” she continued, “and he’s worth celebrating […] I actually love being married. I never thought I would, but this is a spectacular human being, and I am celebrating that I get to share my life with him.”
In the course of their five-year marriage (coming up on six this June), the couple have welcomed two children into their lives, Giulietta and a second child whose name hasn’t been revealed.
Chastain likes to keep her personal life private as much as possible and the two partners do their best to maintain their humbleness despite how successful they have been in their respective fields.
