Nicole Kidman has had as successful of a career in Hollywood as anyone could ask for. But her family life has always kept her being truly human and able to understand and feel the pain of what it is to try and create a family of her own.
Kidman is now mother to four children – two adopted, one biological, and one via surrogate. Since her first marriage to Tom Cruise in 1990, she immediately wanted to start a family, but it wasn’t so easy for the Eyes Wide Shut actress, as she suffered an ectopic pregnancy early in their marriage before deciding to adopt.
“From the minute Tom and I were married, I wanted to have babies,” she told Marie Claire in 2007. “And we lost a baby early on, so that was really very traumatic. And that ’s when it came that we would adopt Bella.”
Cruise and Kidman adopted their children, Bella and Connor. After they were adopted, the couple tried to conceive again, but were unsuccessful after Kidman had a miscarriage.
“There’s a huge, aching yearning. I know the yearning,” she said. “And the loss! The loss of a miscarriage is not talked about enough.”
Although undoubtedly sad about her situation, she was no stranger to an adopted family.
“My mother has an adopted sister,” she continued, “so it’s been part of our family and I knew it would probably play out somewhere in mine. I didn’t think it would happen so early but it did.”
Shortly after her miscarriage in 2001, she and Cruise divorced. It would be only four years later before she met her future husband, Australian country music star Keith Urban, and they tied the knot a year later in 2006, still married today.
Together, and by some miracle, in 2008, the couple welcomed Kidman’s first biological daughter, Sunday.
“I’ve had an ectopic pregnancy, miscarriages and I’ve had fertility treatments,” she said, per Elle. “I’ve done all the stuff you can possibly do to try to get pregnant. So the way it just happened with Sunday was like, ‘What?’ The percentages were so low. It is the miracle in my life.”
Their daughter’s name has a special meaning, too.
“We went from dreading Sunday to really loving it,” she said, regarding Sundays as the loneliest day for a divorcee. “It was the day when nobody was going to bother you, you could stay in bed, you could do what you wanted to do. We just thought, ‘What a great name for our baby.’”
With the gift they were given with Sunday, the couple decided to try again, but were unsuccessful yet again. So, they decided to have their second child – Kidman’s fourth – via surrogate in 2010.
Naming her Faith, they chose her name because they “never gave up faith that they would have another child together,” following the birth of Sunday.
Prior to the birth of Sunday, she told Marie Claire, “I wish I’d had more children, but I wasn’t given that choice. I would’ve loved 10 kids.”
“[It’s] OK because I get to mother other children,” she added. “I have six nieces and nephew and I’m godmother to 12. I love mothering, I love kids: they’re quirky, funny and unfiltered. And then you get to see them grow and send them on their way.”
But in 2017, talking with ET, she’s happy with where she ended up, following the births of her and Urban’s daughters.
“I would have loved to [have more kids], if I would have had more kids, but I think I’m past that point now,” she said. “But I’m very thrilled with what I have – my husband says, ‘Let’s just enjoy what we have!’”
