Jim Gaffigan has a lot to be thankful for.
The comedian, whose family-friendly routines have charmed viewers, has a charming family of his own. Gaffigan and his wife, Jeannie, have five children; 18-year-old Marre, 16-year-old Jack, 13-year old Katie, 11-year-old Michael, and 10-year-old Patrick. Their quirky dynamic is often the subject of his stand-up routines and if this family proves anything, it’s that sometimes you need humor, just to get through a day.
In 2017, Jeannie Gaffigan was diagnosed with a brain tumor the size of a pear. The tumor was benign and removed, but Jeannie suffered a long road to recovery, with things like speaking and swallowing becoming difficult.
Despite it all, both she and her husband kept their levity. “I was a ticking time bomb, waiting to be paralyzed. In addition to making deals with God, all I wanted to do was live and be a Victoria’s Secret model,” Jeannie told AARP. After the nine hour surgery, Jeannie was diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia and put on a feeding tube.
“When [Jim] realized that he was not going to be a widower, he just was my personal comedy concierge. He would wash my hair. He turned into… this very Steel Magnolias gossipy salon owner who has been divorced five times. And this kind of thing showed me… my marriage to Jim was designed at the beginning of time,” she told NPR.
Jim coyly undermines his support in his stand-up routines, promising his audiences that his wife is the rock of the relationship.
“The tumor is gone and so is my ability to win another argument,” he joked.
