A 2003 interview with Angelina Jolie has resurfaced, in which the great romantic claimed that she no longer believed in soulmates, after the dissolution of her marriage to Billy Bob Thornton.
Thornton and Jolie were married between 2000 and 2003. Their whirlwind love story was the subject of tabloid fodder, but for all accounts, their connection was sincere and genuine. After their breakup, Jolie said,
“I grew in a different direction, and I don’t know if there is one person who has the answer to everything—a soul mate. I don’t believe in that. I’m beginning to think I am really supposed to be alone that’s okay.”
“I’m angry. I’m sad. It’s a very difficult and sad time. Sometimes you don’t see things coming, even though they are happening. It was a real deep connection, a deep marriage, so it’s not that simple to say this or that one thing caused the problems. It’s clear to me that our priorities shifted overnight.”
Thornton had previously said, “I walked away. I left that relationship in fear. I was afraid of her. She was too beautiful for me. She was too smart for me. She had too much integrity for me. I felt so small next to her.”
