Hollywood movie icon and wrestler Dwayne Johnson got candid recently about his experience with depression during an interview with The Pivot podcast, talking about how being a girl-dad saved him from what he describes as “three bouts” of depression throughout his life.
Before becoming the “Jumanji” and “Black Adam” star, Johnson had dreams of becoming an NFL player, but sadly, he suffered an injury that would take his dream away as his shoulder would have to be completely reconstructed. Johnson pointed out that he didn’t know what he was dealing with at the time when referring to his mental health.
“I didn’t know what depression was. I just knew I didn’t want to be there. Wasn’t going to any of the team meetings. Wasn’t participating in anything,” Johnson said.
The ex-wrestler also talked about how his divorce from his ex-wife spurred another bout of depression, but he mentioned how this time, he was able to lean on others for support during his time of need.
“Knew what [depression] was at that time. And luckily, at that time, I had some friends who I could lean on and say, ‘You know, I’m feeling a little wobbly now. Got a little struggle happening. I’m seeing a little gray and not the blue,” Johnson said.
The star also revealed that his three daughters, Simone Garcia Johnson, Jasmine Johnson, and Tiana Gia Johnson. “The saving grace for me has really been my daughters, the three of them, and being a girl dad, that’s been the saving grace. You look at them, and you realize, ‘Well, I mean, really, this is what it’s all about,'” said the actor.
