It’s hard to imagine anyone else playing the role of Leigh Anne Tuohy in the movie ‘The Blind Side’ besides Sandra Bullock. But did you know that the actress almost turned down the role?
In a 2009 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bullock admitted that she was initially hesitant to take on the role. “I didn’t trust it,” she said. “I thought it would be schmaltzy and soft.” However, after meeting the real-life Leigh Anne Tuohy, Bullock changed her mind.
“She scared me from the minute she opened the door,” Bullock recalled in the interview. “I was sitting in a chair in her house with my little hands folded in my lap. I couldn’t say anything.”
Despite her initial reservations, Bullock went on to deliver a powerful performance in the movie, earning critical acclaim and an Academy Award for Best Actress.
The movie, based on a book by Michael Lewis, tells the heartwarming and inspiring story of how Leigh Anne and her husband, Sean, took in a homeless black teenager named Michael Oher and helped him get into college and eventually join the NFL.
Bullock’s portrayal of Leigh Anne Tuohy was so convincing that the real-life Leigh Anne gave her seal of approval. “She did a good job,” Tuohy said in a separate interview. “And if she’d done a bad job, I would have told you in a second — I’m all about being honest.”
Despite the success of the movie and Bullock’s performance, the real-life story behind ‘The Blind Side’ has been subject to controversy and legal battles. Michael Oher, the subject of the movie, has disputed some of the events portrayed in the film and filed a lawsuit against the Tuohy family which ultimately has yet to play out.
