The violin isn’t an instrument commonly associated with the club scene. But a gig for classically trained violinist Sarah Charness could be jamming with a DJ, performing at a fashion show, or even playing the National Anthem at a Knicks game.
For these events she plays her hot pink electric violin, designed by Mark Wood in the Viper style. “When I got that violin I was 16 years old. What does every 16-year-old want? I wanted it to be feminine, I wanted it to be Rock ‘n Roll.”
When she takes the stage, “audiences don’t even know it’s a violin — jaws drop. it has shock value. That’s the kind of reaction I want.”
Sarah likes to play where she’s not expected. “My favorite situation to perform in is when people are having a great time and getting into the music. That’s when I’m the most comfortable and have the most fun.”
