You are single. All your friends are in relationships, or they have kids, or both. They’re a clique and it leaves you feeling like you’re on the outside, doing something wrong. But guess what? You might be doing better than you think.
No compromise
When you are in a relationship you are in a state of compromise. Compromise can be a good thing in a relationship, but no matter how you cut it, you’re still giving up things that could be an important part of who you are as an individual. If you are single you get to pursue the things you want. You get to know and develop yourself.
You can give your time to something greater
Relationships take time. Dating and being together can be great, but that’s time you’re not spending doing any number of other things that could add real meaning to your life. You could volunteer at a charity. Strengthen your spiritual life. Create a deeper bond with a friend or family member. You can do anything.
Companionship when you want it
Being single doesn’t mean never going on a date again. It can be liberating to enjoy the companionship of another person without the commitment. Try going out on a date with someone. There are more resources than ever before to help you find temporary companionship (Tinder and others like it), so flirt freely. It’s safe; you’re single after all.
Travel
Travel is something almost every person says they want to do. It’s also one of the top regrets for those who don’t get around to it. You have no strings so you can go wherever you want. You can decide at 1am on a Thursday that you’re going to drive 1000 miles to see an old friend. Is that crazy? YES it’s crazy – crazy awesome!
Peace and quiet
Knock knock! / Who’s there? / … … … / Just the way you like it.
You have the option to say absolutely nothing – to listen to absolutely nothing – to read undisturbed. There’s not much to say here – peace and quiet is its own reward.
These are just a sprinkling of the awesome things about being single. I’m not knocking relationships, they can be great, but they aren’t the only thing to aspire to. Find your independence; explore it; enjoy it. Get to know yourself better.
