Salma Hayek opened up about one of the most devastating issues that can arise for aspiring mothers, infertility. In an interview with People, the Dusk Till Dawn star discussed the fear that she would never become a mother as she got older. But shortly after her 41st birthday, the actress gave birth to her daughter Valentina whom she shares with husband François-Henri Pinault.
“I had my child so late in life,” Hayek said to People. “I thought I wasn’t going to be able to and it was such an important thing to me.”
Following the birth of her daughter Hayek stopped working, stating that all her focus went to her firstborn. Her husband convinced Hayek to return to working and Hayek states that the decision provides her the opportunity to teach her daughter a valuable lesson. “You set an example that you are also your own person and you have to continue to grow in the field that you are working,” Hayek said.
The mother-daughter duo engage in mommy & me workdays as Hayek details in an interview with Red. In the article, Hayek says that this is all a part of making sure her daughter is present in the moment and is actively ‘participating in life.’ Hayek encourages parents to make their children a part of their life and emphasizes an important side effect of including children in everyday ordeals.
“It’s about the human connection, and the things they can learn from participating in life. Otherwise, isolation starts to happen,” Hayek said.
Hayek’s daughter was welcomed into an already large and loving family including Hayek’s three adopted children all from Pinault’s two previous marriages whom she calls a “huge blessing.”
