They say that love knows no bounds, and that couldn’t be more true for Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz. The power couple have been together for over a decade and have weathered their fair share of storms. But through it all, their love has only grown stronger.
Keys and Beatz first met as teenagers in their native New York City. Even though they ran in the same circles, Keys was initially uninterested in Beatz. It wasn’t until years later, when they collaborated on a music project, that she began to see him in a different light. “The more we talked the more I noticed how his mind worked,” Keys wrote in her memoir, More Myself. “Beyond the baggy jeans and arm tats there was depth. He was so aware of what was happening around the world.”
Their relationship progressed quickly, and the couple began dating in the fall of 2008. They kept their romance under wraps for nearly two years before announcing their engagement in May 2010. The same year, they welcomed their first child together, Egypt Daoud Dean. They tied the knot in a private ceremony officiated by Deepak Chopra in 2010.
But their journey to happiness wasn’t without its challenges. Beatz’s divorce from ex-wife Mashonda Tifrere was finalized around the same time as his engagement to Keys. Tifrere accused Keys of breaking up her family, but Keys and Beatz denied the allegations. In her 2018 memoir, Tifrere admitted that her past behavior was fueled by “ego” and a “need for validation,” and she and Keys have since reconciled and share a close friendship.
Keys and Beatz’s blended family grew in 2014 with the arrival of their second son, Genesis Ali Dean. The couple celebrated their 10-year anniversary in July 2020, and Keys released a single titled “Best of Me” that was dedicated to her husband.
Through it all, Keys and Beatz have remained each other’s biggest supporters. They’ve collaborated on music projects and have been each other’s rock through personal and professional highs and lows. Their love story is a reminder that true love can conquer all.
