Carrie Underwood turned 40 last Friday and, amid her tour, decided to spend it with her family of four.
Underwood took two days off her Denim and Rhinestones Tour in preparation for her birthday, and it paid off with some breakfast in bed delivered by her husband of twelve years, NHL star Mike Fisher, as well as a sweet birthday post for the “Before He Cheats” singer.
“Happy birthday babe!!” Fisher captioned an Instagram photo of his wife with a cake and a large selection of wine. “The boys and I love you so much!!”
Carrie and Mike first met in 2008 when her bassist, Mark Childers, set them up to meet at a backstage meet-and-greet after one of her concerts. They hit it off right away.
At the time, Carrie was living in Nashville and Mike was playing for the Ottawa Senators and resided in Canada. So, for the first few months of them getting to know each other, it was completely done via long distance phone calls.
“I mean, can I make dating more difficult?” Carrie said at the time. “Let’s get a hockey guy who lives in another country. Awesome.”
The couple finally shared their first kiss on New Year’s going into 2009, and barely a year later, they were engaged.
The next few years seemed to work greatly in their favor. In 2010, they got married, but they were still splitting their time between Canada and Nashville. But Fisher’s actual prayers were answered six months later when he was traded to the Nashville Predators in 2011.
“I was praying a few days before about [moving teams],” Fisher said at the time. “I was just so frustrated and said ‘God, if you have me go somewhere take care of it, look after it,’ and he sure did that. He put me in a place I was comfortable with and I think that’s part of the reason that this is the place I’m supposed to be and that’s comforting for sure.”
Throughout the 2010s, they saw their family double, as they welcomed both their sons, Isaiah and Jacob. At the time of their oldest son being born, Carrie praised Mike for being a “great dad”.
“My husband is as wonderful as he is hot, and I feel like that’s rare,” she told E!. “He’s amazing. He’s such a great dad and he’s so supportive of what I do and I’m supportive of him and we just love our little family.”
Both Mike and Carrie talked to People in 2019 about why their relationship works so well and how they “admire” each other as parents to their children.
“I admire Carrie as a mom most,” Mike said. “She is so good with our boys and loves us all so well.”
“I had dated guys and kind of knew, like, ‘No.’ Nothing was ever really wrong, but nothing was really right either,” Carrie recalled in the same interview. “With [Fisher], it was like a good partnership. It was an easy relationship to be in. I feel like he is the person I was meant to be with.”
Amid Carrie’s 40th birthday, she also released a new single, titled, “Out of That Truck”. On Instagram, she posted a behind the scenes look at the recording of the song.
“It was inevitable, I guess,” she said about writing the song. “I knew someday I’d have a truck song [and] I wasn’t wrecking it.”
“It was like having this memory, [a] nostalgic kind of song, where it’s like you kind of can’t get over somebody,” she added, “but it’s because of all the physical marks that you left in a space, being the truck.”
Carrie is currently coming towards the end of her tour, with just a few shows left on the west coast, finishing up on Friday in Seattle.
