A source close to Katie Holmes revealed the moment when the Dawson’s Creek actress decided she’d had enough with the Church of Scientology. According to the Daily Mail, Holmes ended her six year long marriage to Tom Cruise out of fear of what would happen to their daughter Suri. Holmes allegedly wanted to avoid the same fate as Nicole Kidman, whose daughter was reportedly turned against her by Scientology.
The Church of Scientology has a strict “disconnection” policy which enforces members to cut contact with their families who are not involved in the church. According to the report, staff members of the church moved into Holmes and Cruise’s home. Cruise is one of the most famous celebrities associated with the controversial religion.
Its roster of famous members includes actors John Travolta, Kirstie Alley, Jenna Elfman, Elisabeth Moss, Ann Archer and Giovanni Ribisi as well as Fox News’s Greta Van Susteren.
Holmes is not the only church member to have left out of wanting to protect her children. Long time and vocal advocate against the church, Leah Remini also has spoken about Holmes’s decision to leave the church for the sake of her daughter. Remini also left the church in 2013 for the sake of her 11-year-old daughter.
Remini praised Holmes for her bravery.
“I had no idea she was going through probably a lot more,” Remini continued. “Looking back now and seeing her and Suri [Cruise] out there in the world, and her being able to be with her daughter and live her life, I’m touched by it because I know now she did what she did leaving because she had to protect her daughter.”
