George Clooney’s decision to have kids at 56 with his wife Amal was not an easy one to make initially.
Talking on the WTF podcast with Marc Maron in 2021, five years after welcoming twins Alexander and Ella, Clooney shared the “emotional” moment he and his wife decided to expand their family while taking a walk near a friend’s house.
“They had a kid there [at the house], which was loud and obnoxious, and I was like, ‘Oh [expletive],’ and we went outside for a walk,” Clooney recalled. “[Amal] said, ‘So, we’re awfully lucky in life,’ and I said, ‘Yeah, we are, and we’re lucky we found each other.’ And she said, ‘It seems like that luck should be shared with some other folks.’
Hesitant at first, Clooney finally responded, saying, “And then I just said, ‘Well, I mean, if you’re in,’ and she said, ‘I think we should try.’”
“I have to say, it was very emotional, because I really was convinced that wasn’t my lot in life and was comfortable with that,” he added.
Prior to this conversation, the Burn After Reading star admitted that he never saw himself neither married nor with his own children. But meeting Amal changed everything.
“Listen, I didn’t want to get married. I didn’t want to have kids,” he explained on the podcast, “and then this extraordinary human being walked into my life, and I fell madly in love, and I knew from the minute I met her that everything was going to be different.”
Even though George was uncertain about fatherhood being a part of his life story, his own father, Nick, never doubted it for a second.
Talking with People in 2017, just a week after George’s twins were born, Nick explained that he always knew George would be “great” as a father.
“I’ve been telling George since he was 30 that I thought he would be a great parent,” Nick said at the time, recalling times when George would openly discuss his desire to not have children. “I would listen to him patiently and then finally step in and say, ‘George, some astounding woman is going to knock your socks off, end of story.’ And it’s exactly what happened.”
While George confessed on The Drew Barrymore Show in 2022 that he was “terrified” at the news that he’d be having, not one, but two children, his father says it was going to be a huge change in his life that he believed he was ready for.
“This change is more profound than any change in his life, and he is excited,” Nick boasted.
The twins turn 6 this June and George and Amal couldn’t be happier with their new family and exciting future together.
