Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar celebrated 20 years of marriage last September, and for the joyous occasion, they had a bone to pick with longtime radio host Howard Stern.
In 2001, a year into dating Gellar, Prinze Jr. appeared on the Howard Stern Show where the then 47-year-old host wagered a bet on the duration of their newly found relationship.
“So, you will marry Sarah Michelle Gellar even though you know that it won’t last?” Stern asked the Scooby Doo alum.
“Oh, absolutely it will last!” Freddie replied.
“I wanna make a written bet with you,” Stern shot back. “In about 10 years, you’re gonna hunt me down and go, ‘Howard, I owe you money,’” jokingly wagering $1 million dollars to which Freddie agreed.
Not only did Freddie and Sarah reach the terms of the bet, but they doubled it!
So, in celebration of their two decades together, Gellar called Stern out on her Instagram Story with screenshots from the episode and a caption that read, “I think you owe us.”
She also talked with ET, who asked her if Howard had paid up yet.
“No, and there’s a lot of charities that would like that money, Howard,” she replied while looking into the camera. “I’m just saying!”
Freddie and Michelle first met while filming the 1997 horror flick I Know What You Did Last Summer. But it wasn’t for another three years before they started dating.
“She didn’t have a driver’s license so I was her chauffeur, and I would drive her to the gym every day and then go to the store, go get myself some lunch and then drive her back and we would just have an hour drive,” Prinze Jr. told ET last November. “We shot in this tiny little crazy town called South Fork. I would drive her to Wilmington every day that we had off, every day during rehearsals and we would have, you know, 55 minutes – if I drove the speed limit – to get to know one another.
“She was from New York City and I am a SoCal kid, so we were night and day, and it was just our philosophies on life just never clicked,” he added. “Then one day everything clicked, and it was about probably three years later, and we started dating and she’s been my girlfriend ever since.”
“Girlfriend” soon turned to “wife”, which soon after turned to “mother” as the couple have welcomed two kids, Charlotte and Rocky, throughout their twenty-year marriage, who each have their own youthful aspirations, one of which aligns with what her parents do for a living.
“My daughter is starting to have an interest in acting and so my wife and I both kind of said we want to be examples for that,” he continued. “My son could care less. He just wants to race cars, go fast and punch people.”
The couple is still waiting on Stern to pay up, having surpassed his challenge twofold and proving so many people wrong in staying happily together all these years.
