UPDATE 01/09/2024: Lisa Bonet has filed for divorce from Jason Momoa, two years after they announced they were separating. RadarOnline reported that she is seeking joint custody and for both parties to not receive spousal support.
ORIGINAL ARTICLE: After seeing 20-year-old Lisa Bonet portray Denise Huxtable on The Cosby Show in 1987, 8-year-old Jason Momoa instantly fell head over heels for her and told his mom, “I want that one.”
Nearly twenty years later, his dream came true after meeting Bonet at a jazz club in 2005 and embarking on what would be a 17-year-long relationship that welcomed two children into the world.
Speaking with James Corden on The Late Late Show in 2017, the Aquaman star opened up about what it was like to meet his “childhood crush” for the first time.
“I turned to my friend and was, like, [silently screaming],” he giddily said, referring to that night at the jazz club. “I had f–king fireworks going off inside, man.”
He then convinced her to take him home to the hotel he was staying at and they sat down at a bar and had “Guiness and grits”, and the rest was history.
In the next three years, they welcomed two children, daughter Lola, and son Nakoa-Wolf, but didn’t marry for another nine years after their youngest was born.
Throughout their relationship, they co-starred in a movie that was written, produced, and directed by Momoa, titled Road to Paloma, supported each other in all their endeavors, and even held a healthy relationship with Lisa’s ex and father to her daughter Zoe, Lenny Kravitz.
Lisa and Lenny were married from 1987 to 1993, and welcomed their daughter Zoe during that time, who you might recognize as Catwoman from the latest installment of the Caped Crusader franchise, Matt Reeves’ The Batman.
But not only have Lenny and Lisa stayed close since their divorce all those years ago, Jason and Lenny had built a strong relationship while raising their blended family.
“You go through a marriage with somebody, you break up and it’s very difficult,” Kravitz told The Times in 2019. “But [Lisa and I] put the work in and we took the time so that we could become best friends again. Our families are blended.”
“I love her husband [Jason],” the “Fly Away” singer added at the time, “he’s like a brother to me — and I love the kids.”
Sadly, Jason and Lisa couldn’t make it through to the end as they announced their separation in January 2022.
They shared in a joint statement at the time, “We have all felt the squeeze and changes of these transformational times… A revolution is unfolding and our family is of no exception… feeling and growing from the seismic shifts occurring. And so we share our Family news that we are parting ways in marriage.”
“The love between us carries on, evolving in ways it wishes to be known and lived. We free each other to be who we are learning to become,” they added.
The love has indeed carried on, as expressed through both social media posts and how their first holiday separated was spent.
In November 2022, Lenny posted a photo to Instagram of himself and Zoe kissing either cheek of Lisa in honor of her birthday, captioning the photo, “Happy birthday mama.”
Jason took to the comment section to show his love, as well, posting a number of heart emojis.
After that, the former couple decided to spend the holidays together. A source told People the following December, “They are friends. They spend time together when Jason is in Los Angeles. Jason is handy and often did things around the house when they lived together,” adding that “He still helps Lisa out now,” and that they were “spending part of the holidays together with the kids.”
Jason was even spotted loading his car with a Christmas tree that he brought to Lisa’s house in Malibu.
Although their marriage has ended, their friendship has truly prevailed and they’ve proven that their love for each other, and for their kids, have not withered and they intend on remaining close for as long as they are still alive and are parents to their two children.
