Meryl Streep and Don Gummer have ended their marriage of 45 years. “Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than 6 years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart,” a representative for Streep said in a statement to PEOPLE. The couple has not been seen together in public since 2018, yet Streep, as recently as October 2023, has continued to wear her wedding band.
They met each other at a pivotal moment in Streep’s life. The future oscar queen needed to move out of an apartment she’d shared with her boyfriend whose death she was mourning. Her brother came to help her move, and he brought with him his friend Don Gummer. Streep would rent out Gummer’s apartment in New York while he traveled and she filmed Kramer vs. Kramer, a film that would earn her her first Oscar.
They would marry six months later in her parents’ home in September 1978. They have four adult children; Henry Wolfe Gummer, 44, Mary Willa “Mamie” Gummer, 40, Grace Gummer, 37, Lousia Jacobson Gummer, 32.
Though the might not be together anymore, their love for one another is inspirational to all. At the 2012 Oscars, Streep made a point to thank her husband first after she’d won her third Oscar. “First, I’m going to thank Don because when you thank your husband at the end of the speech they play him out with the music, and I want him to know that everything I value most in our lives, you’ve given me,” she said.
