Julia Roberts and Dan Moder have been married since 2002 and share three children together, twins Phinnaeus and Hazel, and son Henry.
For both the Hollywood workers, this is their second marriage. Moder was married to celebrity make-up artist Vera Steimberg and Roberts was married to country musician Lyle Lovett, but they divorced before she and Moder met.
Moder, however, was still married at the time of their meeting in 2000, when he was cameraman for her film The Mexican. A year later, Moder announced he was divorcing Steimberg and the divorce was finalized a year after that.
Quickly after their divorce, Dan and Julia got married, a stretch of events that Roberts got much criticism for being a sort of “homewrecker”.
Roberts talked with Oprah a year after they were married, addressing the continuous slander she was receiving on the situation of his divorce.
“I’m an easy person to point the finger at — ‘she did it’ — and I see that. I don’t begrudge people the easy finger-point. It just doesn’t happen to be so,” she said at the time.
“He sorted his whole thing out, separate and apart from me. And I sorted my life out, separate and apart from him,” she added, referring to her relationship with actor Benjamin Bratt, whom she dated for four years before she met Moder. “I think that’s the only reason we were able to ultimately fall in love with each other and be together.”
Another thing that could have helped their relationship last, as Julia suggested, was the fact that she took her time in dating Dan before becoming husband and wife.
Julia’s first engagement was to the Stand By Me alum Kiefer Sutherland. They began dating in 1990 and eventually had a wedding date set for June 14, 1991.
However, she broke off the engagement just days before the wedding, reportedly running away to Ireland with someone else, leaving Sutherland to wonder what went wrong.
Two years later, she was married for the first time.
Julia met her first husband, Lyle Lovett, sometime in 1992-93. They began dating in June 1993 and married that same month. In many cases, you’d assume a marriage built on that is destined to be over soon, and in this case, you’d be right.
They finalized their divorce in 1995.
After that, Julia had a relationship that actually lasted fairly long as far as dating is concerned. She dated actor Benjamin Bratt for four years, but broke up once she met her now husband, Dan Moder.
She and Moder dated for two years before tying the knot and it’s clear that those two years were what she needed to figure out that he was truly the one. Not to mention the fact that she decided to settle down with someone who wasn’t an actor or a musician, which was probably far less stressful of a relationship than what she dealt with before.
21 years later, they’re still making it work, splitting their time between their Malibu and New Mexico home, the latter residency being particularly comfortable for the Pretty Woman star and her family of five.
“It’s peaceful, and it’s a relief. I always say you can’t be in a bad mood [in New Mexico]. I don’t know if it’s New Mexico or just the mountains, but you can’t be silly in a negative way,” she told Oprah. “You can be silly in a fun, whimsical way, but the petty, trite things that make you go, ‘Oh, God, it’s not the right size’ or ‘Why is this happening like this?’ — that kind of stuff doesn’t exist so much here. Everything is kind of clear.”
