Kate Hudson celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with her family on Friday, but they weren’t attending parades or bar hopping in honor of the Irish. Instead, they went out to dinner in celebration of her longtime step dad Kurt Russell, who turned 72 on March 17.
In a sweet Instagram post, Hudson recorded her 4-year-old daughter, Rani Rose – whom she shares with fiance Danny Fukijawa – as she sat beside her grandfather and helped blow out the candle after he had her wait before he made a wish for his birthday.
“Always a double fun day in our family! St Patrick’s day and Pa’s birthday!” Hudson wrote in the caption, referring to Russell as she always has as “Pa”. “Love this man so much! How about some birthday love for Kurt! 🍀🎉🎂 Happy Birthday Pa!”
After Rani blew out the candle, everyone cheered and Kurt gave his granddaughter a kiss on her head.
Kurt has been Kate’s unofficial step father since 1983, when he started dating her mother, fellow actress Goldie Hawn. Kurt and Goldie have been together ever since but have never gotten married.
Goldie took to Instagram on Friday, too, to celebrate her “wacky” partner’s birthday.
“Happy birthday to the wacky man in my life!” Hawn wrote in her caption for a photo of her and Kurt sitting beside each other with him goofily laughing and her giving him a sort of “side eye” look. “I love you baby ❤️”
Despite not even legally being her step dad, Kate has expressed in the past how she looks at Kurt as being her father.
Hudson celebrated Father’s Day in 2021 by posting a sweet Instagram tribute to Kurt.
The caption read, “Our great loyal protector. Our dependable authentic captain. Our wild, sometimes untamed adventurer father! From skiing out of helicopters, flying in open cockpit planes, dirt bikes, bareback horse riding, motorcycle rides, boat racing…a childhood and adulthood of adventure. Our Pa always makes life fun. Always down for exploring, always ready to take on the good life with his family. He’s one hell of a Dad ❤️ Lucky us 🙏 Happy Fathers Day Pa I love you so much ❤️”
After being estranged from her biological father, Bill Hudson, Kate and her brother Oliver were raised by Kurt throughout their childhood.
Three years into dating, Kurt and Goldie welcomed their only son, Wyatt, who also went on to be an actor, appearing in movies like 22 Jump Street and This Is 40.
It must be something in the family blood that helps them all make the big time in Hollywood.
