Keanu Reeves has been dating his girlfriend, artist Alexandra Grant, since sometime in 2019, having been friends for nearly a decade beforehand. With engagement rumors circling these past few months, it’s probably about time Reeves divorces his estranged wife. Oh … you didn’t know? Keanu and Winona Ryder just celebrated 30 years together last year. They’re married! … sort of. Let me explain.
In 1992, Ryder and Reeves co-starred in Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula, in which they played the roles of Mina and Jonathan Harker. In the movie, the two wed each other in a ceremony that involved “I dos”, a real Romanian priest, and even a kiss to seal the marriage. So, according to tradition, and “under the eyes of God”, that ceremony was the real deal.
Or at least Winona thinks so. She and Reeves sat down with EW in 2018 to discuss their marital status.
“We actually got married in Dracula,” Winona said. “No, I swear to god I think we’re married in real life. In that scene, Francis [Ford Coppola] used a real Romanian priest. We shot the master and he did the whole thing. So I think we’re married.”
Reeves then asked, “We said yes?” to which Ryder responded, “Don’t you remember that? It was on Valentine’s Day.”
“Oh my gosh,” Keanu said in response, “we’re married.”
In 2021, the question came up again about the two, while Keanu was talking with Esquire, who asked if he and Winona are still “technically” married.
“We did a whole take of a marriage ceremony with real priests,” he joked. “Winona says we are. Coppola says we are. So I guess we’re married…under the eyes of God.”
Coppola confirmed his view on the situation, talking with The Guardian back in 2018.
“In a sense, when we were all done, we realized that Keanu and Winona really are married as a result of this scene and this ceremony.”
Reeves has been dating Alexandra Grant for almost four years now, while Winona has been dating her beau, Scott Mackinlay Hahn, for over ten years. Marriage is inevitably in the conversation for both relationships. But I do believe your first marriage must be over before you can commit to another.
So, either there was some glitch in the Matrix, or we’ve been stuck in the Upside Down for a little while, because I don’t remember any divorce between Winona and Keanu.
Again, though, happy upcoming 31st anniversary to the loving couple. Although they don’t spend too much time together, 31 years is something to celebrate.
