Leah Remini is suing the Church of Scientology and David Miscavige. Remini is alleging that “for the past ten years, Ms. Remini has been stalked, surveilled, harassed, threatened, intimidated, and, moreover, has been the victim of intentional malicious and fraudulent rumors via hundreds of Scientology-controlled and -coordinated social media accounts that exist solely to intimidate and spread misinformation.”
She is also seeking any information available on her missing friend, Shelly Miscavige.
Shelly Miscavige is the wife of the leader of the Church of Scientology, David. She has not been seen publicly since 2007. The Church of Scientology claims that her absence is voluntary.
Remini was a member of the church since her mother joined, when Remini was 13-years-old. She says she knew she had to leave when Shelly didn’t appear at the wedding of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, which was considered an extremely high-profile event and “the wedding of the century”, as Tom Cruise “is essentially second in command in Scientology.”
“When Ms. Remini asked a group of Scientology executives and Tom Cruise’s personal handlers … ‘Where is Shelly?’ she was immediately admonished by the group, despite the fact that she and Ms. Miscavige were good friends,” he lawyer claims.
Remini says she was then accused of a “High Crime” within the church and after submitting a “Knowledge Report”, was held in FLAG, a sort of headquarters for the church based out of Florida, for four months, without being allowed to leave the facility.
“Upon arrival, Ms. Remini was presented with dozens of internal reports from Scientologists complaining about her behavior at the wedding. It was clear to Ms. Remini that she was being punished for asking where Shelly Miscavige was and for filing reports on David Miscavige and others. Ms. Remini was held at FLAG for four months while she was put through a process that cost her hundreds of thousands of dollars and nearly led her to have a psychotic breakdown,”
“People who share what they’ve experienced in Scientology, and those who tell their stories and advocate for them, should be free to do so without fearing retaliation from a cult with tax exemption and billions in assets,” her lawyer finishes.
