Interstellar star, Matthew McConaughey, revealed in a podcast with talk-show host Kelly Ripa that he and True Detective co-star Woody Harrelson, 61, might be blood-related brothers.
No, this isn’t some promotional work for McConaughey and Harrelson’s joint Apple TV Show (ironically) named “Brother from Another Mother,” which is currently in the works.
Variety reported that during the podcast, McConaughey, 53, began to talk about the possibility of Harrelson possibly being his blood brother. He brought up an anecdote about a trip the pair took to Greece along with their families and, notably, McConaughey’s mother, who revealed that she “knew” Harrelson’s father. The ‘knew’ was perceived to have a deeper meaning by McConaughey.
Her comments prompted McConaughey to work out the math regarding the matter and look into his lineage. Variety reported McConaughey saying: “We went on to unpack what this ‘knew’ meant and did some math and found out that [Harrelson’s] dad was on furlough at the same time that my mom and dad were in their second divorce. Then there’s possible receipts and places out in West Texas where there might have been a gathering, or a meeting, or a ‘knew’ moment.”
It’s reported that the pair are considering doing a DNA test. McConaughey is more reserved than Harrelson about taking the DNA test: “It’s a little harder for me because [Harrelson is] asking me to take a chance to go, ‘Wait a minute, you’re trying to tell me my dad may not be my dad after 53 years of believing that?’ I got a little more skin in the game.”
Blood or not, Harrelson and McConaughey have an ultimate bromance. Variety reported McConaughey as saying that Harrelson and himself begin where the other ends and vice-versa. The Harrelson and McConaughey families are also close, with Harrelson and McConaughey earning an “uncle” title from the other’s children.
But even though the dynamic duo seems inseparable as friends and coworkers, US Weekly quoted McConaughey as saying: “While Woody and I are the best of friends, we have different approaches in how we raise our children and how we go about certain things.” This quote was followed up by McConaughey talking about how the TV show the two are working on will explore the difference between the two of them:
“This is a love story. It’s a story about us; he and I and our families come together.”
The show has yet to announce a possible release date.
