Aboard the Lufthansa flight Wednesday that was forced to execute an emergency landing after suffering severe turbulence was Matthew McConaughey and his wife, Camila Alves. The incident left seven passengers hospitalized.
The flight took off from Austin, TX, and was heading for Frankfurt, Germany. While at an altitude of 37,000 feet over Tennessee, the plane dropped 4,000 feet, throwing some passengers out of their seats and, in one case, a flight attendant hit the ceiling of the interior.
Alves posted to Instagram a video of the aftermath of the turbulence, showing various items scattered across the floor, including napkins, food, and dishes.
“On Flight last night, I was told [the] plane dropped almost 4000 feet, 7 people went to the hospital,” she captioned the post. “Everything was flying everywhere.
“…the plane was CHAOS,” she added. “And the turbulence [kept] on coming.”
The flight was diverted to Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia where the injured passengers received medical attention for “minor injuries” according to a statement by a Lufthansa spokesperson given to Yahoo Entertainment.
Camila and Matthew were able to stay in a local Marriott and made it to a bar “1 minute before closing” before sleeping and hopping on a flight the next day.
Speaking of bars, that’s the setting where Matthew and Camila first met almost twenty years ago.
In 2006, McConaughey was at a West Hollywood nightclub with professional cyclist, Lance Armstrong, when he first laid eyes on his future wife.
“She showed up, and she moved right to left in front of my eyes across that club,” he told People in 2020. “It was as if she was floating. And I did not say, ‘Who is that?’ I said, ‘What is that?’ And then introduced myself. Since that evening, I have not wanted to spend time with any other woman.”
Alves admitted she didn’t realize it was Matthew when she met him at the club.
The two started dating sometime after that interaction, and two years later, at their red carpet debut for the premiere of McConaughey’s film, Fool’s Gold, Alves revealed her baby bump of their first child together.
A few months later, they welcomed their first son, Levi, after three days of labor and an emergency c-section.
The following four years saw another McConaughey baby, daughter Vida, and the couple tying the knot in 2012. Their kids served as the flower girl and ring bearer for the big day.
“[They] seem to understand what we are doing on a spiritual level,” Alves told People at the time.”
Six months later, they welcomed their third child, son Livingston.
The two raise their children in Austin, TX, and have made a few public appearances alongside them, including when McConaughey received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2014, where Matthew opened up about his gratitude towards his wife’s commitment to taking care of the children while he works his busy Hollywood schedule.
“When I go to work, she says, ‘All right, kiddos, we’re all going.’ No discussion,” he said. “She has things she does in her own life that she’s willing to drop, put in second place,” he said. “[She says,] ‘You’re the primary breadwinner … We’re going with you. This is your career. We’re going.’ That’s a huge privilege.”
Camila conducts her own entrepreneurial work, having started both a handbag line and launching a frozen organic baby food line.
“All of our kids were right there helping choose every single flavor, testing, telling us what they did and didn’t like,” Alves said of the support from her family for the baby food. “We were all working together.”
“I couldn’t have done it if I didn’t have [Matthew’s] support because I had to work very long hours seven days a week,” she added. “If my family wasn’t there to be able to hold the ball when I wasn’t there and be able to really support me, then I couldn’t have done it.”
They support each other in everything they do and have proven to have a strong marriage and healthy relationship with their children.
