Matthew Perry has been found dead at 54. Perry was found at his residence in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles. Authorities responded to a water rescue call on Saturday afternoon.
Perry was known for his role as Chandler Bing on the hit series Friends and in the wake of his death Friends co-creators Marta Kauffman, David Crane and Kevin Bright released a statement to CBS.
“He was a brilliant talent,” it continued. “It’s a cliche to say that an actor makes a role their own, but in Matthew’s case, there are no truer words. From the day we first heard him embody the role of Chandler Bing, there was no one else for us. We will always cherish the joy, the light, the blinding intelligence he brought to every moment – not just to his work, but in life as well. He was always the funniest person in the room. More than that, he was the sweetest, with a giving and selfless heart. We send all of our love to his family and friends. This truly is The One Where Our Hearts Are Broken.”
The LA coroner is planning on running a toxicology report on Perry before formally announcing his official cause of death. A law enforcement officer close to the investigation confirmed to CNN that foul play is not suspected in this tragic passing.
Throughout his life Perry was a strong advocate for addiction and overcoming hardships in life. During an interview with “Q With Tom Power” podcast Perry revealed how he wanted his legacy to be filled with. According to Perry he wanted to be remembered as “as somebody who lived well, loved well, was a seeker” and that “his paramount thing is that he wants to help people.”
“That’s what I want,” he said.
