Michelle Pfeiffer and her husband, David Kelley, married in 1993. They met on a blind date, and at first, Pfeiffer considered setting Kelley up with her sister, when a friend interjected, “Don’t you dare. I will kill you…I’m sitting across from your next husband.”
At the time that they met, Pfeiffer had just begun the adoption process for Claudia, alone. Two months after their first date, Claudia was brought home, and the three became a family. Pfeiffer told Good Housekeeping in 2007, “So we had this child with us right away, and most people don’t have that. But I really got to see [Kelley] in a situation that certainly would separate the boys from the men. Obviously, he really rose to the occasion. We both got to see each other as parents before we progressed in our relationship together, and in a strange way, it took the pressure off, as a couple.”
Pfeiffer posted a selfie of she and Kelley on Instagram for Valentine’s Day, with the caption, “We go together. My Valentine 💌”
If the name David E. Kelley sounds familiar, it probably because you’re a fan of his work, and haven’t noticed! Kelley is a film and television writer, responsible for such credits as Doogie Houser, M.D., Ally McBeal, Big Little Lies, and Big Sky–the latter of which, Michelle’s sister, DeDee Pfeiffer, plays in. Despite their solid relationship, the pair has elected not to work together on any projects, saying, “Nobody writes, honestly, better for women than he does. It’s unbelievable. And yet, I value our relationship more than a good part, and I just think it’s too risky.”
She told Parade, “I got really lucky. I never take him for granted. I’ve never met a person who has more integrity than my husband. I respect that. There’s his humor and intelligence, too, and he’s really cute, all those things — but if you don’t respect your partner, you’ll get sick of him.”
