Don’t let anyone ever tell you crying is a bad thing. Tears have some wonderful benefits to our minds and bodies. Here are a few reasons why it’s OK to release your steam and have a good cry session:
It decreases your stress
After crying, there is usually a sense of contentment and relief. Studies have shown that emotional tears contain higher stress-related hormones, and when you cry, there is a release. So if you’re feeling way too stressed, it might be time for a good crying session!
Tears get rid of toxins in your body
Crying not only removes stress, but it removes toxic chemicals, such as excess protein content. One study found that tears remove toxins trapped in your body, like when you sweat and exhale. Tears aso carry lysozyme, an antibacterial fluid that kills germs in contact. Tears are needed to keep your body healthy and happy.
It helps you communicate
Although it’s hard to talk when you’re sobbing, crying has been shown to improve communication. Tears show the emotion that words cannot express, and help people understand your feelings. By crying in front of people you are not being weak, instead you are showing the pain and frustration you have pent up that you’re not able to communicate.
Crying is actually a mood-booster
Crying during an emotional time in your life (or even during a sad movie) can actually help put you in a better mood. Studies have shown that after crying, your mood actually gets better. It’s also been found that tears spark endorphin production in our body. Crying can be helpful in alleviating anxiety and depression.
It can give way to creativity
After crying, some people find solace in expressing their emotions through writing, drawing or another artistic means. People can only cry for so long, but the feelings can stick, and another way to release them is through your imagination and creativity.
