Do you want 2017 to be the year you breakthrough to your next level? If you said “Yes”, let me ask you another question: Are you insane?
I know you didn’t expect that! Why do I ask? “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” – Albert Einstein
If you want this to be the year you finally breakthrough, then you want to shift from Insanity to Intentionality. “Intentionality is doing something on purpose, designed to get a result.”
If you want to break out, get yourself to do some new things and Be Intentional!
Here are two easy exercises that can help you to set an intention for the year. This clarity helps you direct your energy and attention so you make choices in the service of what you really want rather than pass your days ticking items off your list.
Find Your One Word
What is the high level, overall outcome you want for the year? Find “One Word” that captures this overarching theme. For example, if you want to grow your network or feel more love in your life, your word might be “Connection.” If you want to scale your business and work less, it might be “Systems.” If you want to have an impact on the direction of your company’s work, it might be “Influence.” If you have been in your role for too long and are capable but under-utilized it might be “Promotion.”

Set a Bold Goal
What is a Bold Goal? It is an ambitious undertaking which inspires and motivates you to accomplish it. Your Bold Goal is an initiative that gives you a clear sense of purpose. You can channel your passion into it. What could you do if you were a notch or two higher on your confidence, on your productivity, on your influence? If your blocks were removed? If you really were the kind of person who ‘goes for it!’
Your Bold Goal will require you to grow in order to achieve it. It will impact your life and other people for good when you’ve done it. It’s a goal you can break into milestones of months or weeks in order to reach it.
You want to try to make it specific enough. Not “I’ll have more influence,” rather “what specifically will your impact be?” Go beyond: “I’ll earn more money”, rather you’ll earn how much?
When it comes to your Bold Goal, it’s helpful to know your success criteria. How will you know when you’ve succeeded at your Bold Goal? What is the 1 thing you have been unwilling to do in order to make your Bold Goal happen? Are you willing to do it this year?
These exercises can help you set an intention. This clarity can help you make the thousands of choices you will face in the coming year – should I put my attention on this, or that? Always choose the activity that is in the service of your Bold Goal.
