One of music’s most iconic duos is currently locked in a legal battle of the ages. Hall and Oates, the Philadelphia born band, known for hits such as “You Make My Dreams” and “Maneater” have been battling out differences in court and as of recent reports have come out stating that Daryl Hall has been granted a temporary restraining order against John Oates.
Hall and his trust, The Daryl Hall Revocable Trust, filed a sealed complaint against Oates and two co-trustees of The John W. Oates TISA Trust on Nov. 16 in the Nashville Chancery Court, PEOPLE can confirm.
The court records have been sealed but a source close to the case confirmed to USA TODAY in an email that a hearing has been scheduled between the two parties for November 30.
Daryl Hall and John Oates first met while students at Temple University. The duo met exiting a local music venue after a gun fight broke out in the local area.
Last year Hall expressed his disdain for his role in the duo and the public perception to the band. “It’s very annoying to be a duo, because people always say, ‘Oh, you’re the tall one, you’re the short one. You’re the one that sings, you’re the one that doesn’t sing,'” he said. “You’re always compared to the other person. It works with comedy entities, like Laurel and Hardy or Abbott and Costello, but with music, it’s (messed) up, actually.”
Hall also spoke up about his relationship with John Oates back in 2022, hinting at the chaotic path to come. “You think John Oates is my partner? … He’s my business partner. He’s not my creative partner,” he said at the time.
“John and I are brothers, but we are not creative brothers. We are business partners,” continued Hall. “We made records called Hall & Oates together, but we’ve always been very separate, and that’s a really important thing for me.”
