Gerard Butler has had multiple health scares in recent memory. From having to be rescued from strong waves during production on a film, to being hospitalized over an injection of bee venom, to the major motorcycle accident which almost claimed his life.
In 2017, Butler was riding his motorcycle when he was struck by a vehicle. Though he broke no bones in the accident, his flesh injuries were severe.
“Everything went black—I couldn’t see anything,” he said. “But I knew I was in the air for an inordinate amount of time. And as I went through the air, I literally thought, ‘If this doesn’t go the right way, I’m going to die. It really depends on how I land.’ ”
“I’m lucky to be here,” he went on. “I went 33 feet through the air.”
“I did a somersault,” which gave him, “five fractures in my right foot alone, because I landed right on my knees, so I’ve done my knees in and my left foot. And this had been the busiest period of my career.”
Butler and the defendant in this case, Leah Sherman, are reportedly reaching a settlement agreement, with the total payment amount sitting around $5.25 million. After his injuries, Butler took a step back from Hollywood, though never formally retiring.
“I had a surgery that went wrong, which then became seven surgeries. I had a motorcycle accident that almost killed me and I suddenly thought, ‘There has to be something more.’”
