If anyone in Hollywood can be considered the best of friends it’s Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. During an exclusive interview with People, Tomlin revealed something about the first time she met Fonda. “She looked like she was very glamorous and she could be a lot of trouble,” Tomlin joked about her 80 for Brady costar.
The pair stars in the film Moving On and while most of their collaborations just come their way Tomlin revealed that she had a hand in making sure that Fonda was cast to play opposite of her. “I did call Paul [Weitz] about this movie and ask him to write one for us. But that’s because I had a special relationship with him and I don’t think I have that relationship with anyone else,” says Tomlin.
The duo has had their comical moments together including a Facetime video where the two struggled with technology as they tried to announce a live Frankie and Grace reunion table read back in October 2022. “I think we’re on mute,” Fonda, 85, said in the video she posted to Instagram and Twitter. Tomlin, 83, responded: “How can I put just you on mute?”
Even in difficult times, the best friends stick together. After Fonda revealed that she had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma Tomlin spoke with People once again where she praised her bestie’s resilience against the disease.
“She’s very forthright and talkative about what’s going on with her in all respects…First thing, she says, ‘Don’t worry, it’s really treatable. It’s one of the most treatable forms that you could possibly have, so I’m really lucky in that regard,’ ” Tomlin said, adding with a laugh: “And she’s like, ‘So are you gonna come to my next fundraiser?’ That’s her main objective.”
