Renee Zellweger is opening up about the public scrutiny surrounding her weight. After ‘Bridget Jones’ Diary’, a romantic comedy following her as the titular character, she faced immense criticism and–quite frankly–some inappropriate interview questions.
“It was so silly,” she said. “The 20-doughnuts-a-day rumors, and the ‘Does she look better Bridget-y or bony?’ questions. I didn’t understand the fascination with it. It’s just my job. You’re supposed to look like the characters you play, and that’s all I was doing.”
Regardless, Zellweger is adamant that her character was a normal weight for a woman her size.
“I never thought she had a weight issue. I thought that was just something that, all of us, we think: ‘Oh, I’d love to change this thing about myself’ when in fact nobody notices it but you. Bridget is a perfectly normal weight, and I’ve never understood why it matters so much.”
“It saddens me so much because it seems to imply that one way of being is acceptable and the other isn’t valuable, and that’s just not true.”
