Richard Gere fell ill with pneumonia over the weekend while he and his family – wife Alejandra Gere and their two sons – were vacationing in Mexico to celebrate Alejandra’s 40th birthday.
Alejandra took to Instagram a number of times this past week to give updates on her husband’s recovering health, saying he’s “feeling much better”.
“Hi everyone, a little update,” she captioned a photo of the four of them walking, “Richard is feeling much better, we are all feeling much better, “almost” back to normal.. we want to thank doctor Rios’s and the hospital la Joya. We came to Mexico to continue with our conservation project south of Puerto Vallarta, we all came not feeling well from NY, our youngest James and Richard got Pneumonia and Alexander and I sinusitis and ear infections, now we are all well and almost fully recovered. Thank you all for your messages!
“Richard wanted me to post this second photo to show you that he is feeling much better,” she added, with a second photo that was of a younger, shirtless Richard Gere.
Alejandra first shared that their whole family had been feeling ill via an Instagram post last Thursday.
“Thank you for all the birthday wishes…after almost 3 weeks of everyone being sick in our family today finally I feel much better,” she captioned a photo of her and her sons walking on the beach in Mexico.
Later, TMZ reported that Richard had been checked into a hospital after coming down with pneumonia, which a representative of Gere confirmed with NBC News via an email.
On Sunday, Alejandra posted a brief update about his recovery after discovering that the news of Richard’s pneumonia had spread across the internet.
“I woke up this morning and I saw the news and all your kind and worry messages, he is recovering,” she wrote, “he is [feeling] much better today! The worst has already [passed]! Thank you all for [your] sweet messages we really appreciate them!”
For someone his age (73), an illness like pneumonia could be extremely dangerous. Thankfully, it seems he’s okay, as well as the family, as they all seemed to share some rotten luck recently with being sick..
