Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian are turning their family of three to a family of four!
The four-time Olympic tennis gold-medalist revealed she was pregnant at the Met Gala Monday night, supported with a post on her Instagram.
In a collection of photos showing off her and her hubby’s Met Gala outfits, she captioned the post, “Was so excited when Anna Wintour invited the 3 of us to the Met Gala.” One of the photos even showed her holding her baby bump.
The couple have been married nearly six years and share 5-year-old daughter Olympia.
From the outside, a marriage between a professional tennis player and the co-founder of the highly successful website and social media platform Reddit may seem a bit odd. But when the Italian Open and the Festival of Media Global conference took place in the same week in Rome, I guess , they were destined to run into each other.
Serena spoke about their meeting in a 2017 interview with Vanity Fair.
They were both staying at the same hotel in Rome in 2015. One morning, while Serena was having breakfast by the hotel pool with an array of open tables scattered around the venue, Alexis decided to sit at the table directly next to Serena’s.
In an attempt to drive him away for some privacy for Serena and her friend, fellow tennis player and Australian native Zane Haupt, Zane said, “There’s a rat by your table. You don’t want to sit there.”
A skeptical Alexis calmly asked if they were telling the truth to which Serena said, “No, we just don’t want you sitting there. We’re going to use that table.”
Alexis responded, “I’m from Brooklyn. I see rats all the time.”
His collected, unfazed demeanor got Serena’s attention and she invited him to sit with them, to which he accepted.
And it was all love from there on out. Alexis got an invite to Serena’s next match for the Italian Open and later that same year, on a trip to Paris. They were dating almost immediately.
And Alexis knew she was the one, flying her out to Rome 18 months later to the same hotel, sitting at the same table, and a little plastic rat on top of the table before he went down on one knee and popped the question.
Serena wrote a poem and posted it to Reddit (fittingly) of her husband’s adorable proposal.
“I came home a little late. Someone had a bag packed for me and a carriage awaited. Destination: Rome, to escort me to my very own ‘charming,’” she wrote. “Back to where our stars first collided. And now it was full circle. At the same table we first met by chance. This time he made it not by chance, but by choice. Down on one knee, he said 4 words and I said yes.”
They welcomed their first daughter Olympia not long after, and here they are years later adding to their tiny family. And with Serena recently announcing that she’s stepping away from tennis, she’ll have plenty of time to look after her family.
