ORIGINAL ARTICLE: Sinéad O’Connor, the gifted Irish singer-songwriter, has died at the age of 56.
While no cause of death has been disclosed, O’Connor’s family members have released a statement by the BBC and RTE. “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time,” the singer’s family said.
She was hailed for her ability to be authentic by the Rolling Stones after the magazine named her their artist of the year in 1991. “She proved that a recording artist could refuse to compromise and still connect with millions of listeners hungry for music of substance,” the magazine declared.
O’Connor was a vocal activist for the beliefs and causes she held dear to her heart. Most infamously, O’Connor has been an avid critic of the Catholic Church as for many years she called out the concealment of abuse at the Church’s hands. Outspoken and bold, O’Connor was not without her struggles and personal demons. She was open about her struggles with bipolar disorder and the death of her teenage son.
As we remember the iconic activist and singer, it’s important to reflect on how we can learn from Sinead as her spirit continues on to the next life. May Sinéad rest in peace.
