Katrina Bookman was playing a penny slot machine in Jamaica, when the screen told her that she had won $42,949,672. If the number wasn’t the result of a machine malfunction, it would have been the largest slot machine pay-out in US history.
“After explaining the circumstances to Ms. Bookman, we offered to pay her the correct amount that was shown on the printed ticket,” a spokesperson for the casino said. “Machine malfunctions are rare, and we would like to extend our apologies to Ms. Bookman for any inconvenience this may have caused.”
The correct amount? $2.65. To soften the blow, the casino also offered Bookman a steak dinner. “I should win the max,” Bookman said. “And I feel like I should treat him (the casino employee) to a steak dinner.”
Bookman is fighting to receive the maximum payout allowed for that type of machine: $6,500.
