After forcing themselves into an Alabama home on Sunday for a welfare check, officers from the Birmingham Police Department made a heartbreaking discovery.
According to a press release by the department, the slain bodies of 3-year-old Desmond Burt Jr. and his 62-year-old grandmother, Cynthia Delane Burt, were found in a back room in the home. The little boy’s father, 31-year-old Desmond Burt Sr., is suspected to have killed his son and mother.
The department has confirmed that the man has been charged with two counts of capital murder and is being held without bond.
According to Scott Thurman, the interim chief who spoke at a press conference on Tuesday, the ‘blunt force trauma’ nature of the pair’s injuries led detectives to immediately classify their killings as homicides.
Thurman said that Desmond Burt Sr. was arrested at the scene on Sunday, and is the only suspect in the case. A motive has not yet been publicly discussed, and Burt Sr. has not entered a plea.
A GoFundMe campaign, which describes Desmond as “a pure, precious soul” who “was full of innocence, joy and very loved by his family,” has been created to help with the little boy’s funeral costs.
